Driving License in Hungary

Foreigners can apply for valid Category A (motorycles) and Category B (cars), driving license in Hungary.  You will need to have a Passport, Residence permit (valid for more than 6 months), medical certificate, translation of diplomas and pass the exams.

The total costs you should expect is about EUR 750. Hungary driving license (Vezetői engedély) is valid for 10 years.

European driving licenses are divided into several categories.

If you already hold a driving license issued by the foreign authority accepted in Hungary 


a) in the country in which the license was issued joined the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (see below), or
b) the license was issued in another EEA state,
c) is accompanied by a certified translation into Hungarianand use it to determine the content of driving privileges.
This type of foreign driving licence exchangeable without exam requirement.

If you come from a country not listed in 1968 Vienna convention (eg. India, Australia, Hong Kong), you have to naturalise for B license and take driving test.

Documents to be submitted:

  • driving licence issued by the foreign authorities
  • medical opinion certifying fitness
  • proof of payment of the driving-licence issuing fee
  • an authentic Hungarian translation of the driving licence (if the country in which the driving licence was issued is not a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic)

 

1.THEORETICAL COURSE

General knowledge of traffic, car mechanics, driving theory.

 The exam – You can choose the computer test exam (4.600 HUF)

– or take the oral exam in the language of your country (6.000 HUF)

An official interpreter has to be present at the oral theoretical exam. (for extra costs.)

2. DRIVING PRACTICE (2×50 minutes/session)

According to Hungarian laws 29 lessons of driving are required.

(+ 1 hour of exam)

You must take a practical exam:

Traffic exam (60 minutes)

You can take the exam if:

  • You are over 17

You can meet the teacher at the place you agreed about previously. (Some place near the practice area.)

3. COSTS

Theoretical education fee:        50.000 HUF    20% discount for students (40.000 HUF)
Traffic rules and test questions practice book: Free
Driving practice lessons:    30 x 4.800 HUF/session 144.000 HUF
  • Theoretical exam: 4.600 HUF
  • Practical exam: 11.000 HU
  • First Aid course fee: 10.000 HUF
  • First Aid exam fee: 7.900 HUF

 Total cost: 227,500 HUF (€750)
