Residence permit to study in Hungary

To obtain a study permit for Hungary, one must plan on studying at an accredited secondary or higher education academic institution on a full-time basis. In addition to this, financial and living means must be shown. The entire process is quite strict and not an easy one for most students. Family members who are accompanying a main member on, for example, a work permit, and are planning on studying in school or university, must obtain a study permit.

Study in Hungary

Residence permit for Studies 

  • Third country nationals/citizens who wish to reside in Hungary for the purpose of studying in an accredited secondary or higher education academic institution on a full-time basis,
  • Participation in a preparation course of an accredited higher education institution.

The Residence permit issued for the purpose of attending a preparatory course prior to education may be extended for the purpose of pursuing studies only if the third-country national in question is admitted into an institution of higher education accredited in Hungary or a foreign higher education institution authorised to operate in the territory of Hungary following the preparatory course.

 

If the permit was issued for the purpose of preparatory course it can only be extended if the person gains acceptance to a higher education institution.

Eligibility

To support the purpose of residence (for a study permit), you will need to provide sufficient proof in form of either acceptance certificate from the academic institute, or in another credible way. Proper language knowledge also needs to be certified (language of the studies, so not necessarily Hungarian) by way of language exam documentation or an affidavit of completed previous studies in that language.

Sufficient funds for the time of stay must also be demonstrated (e.g. certificate of scholarship money, bank account balance, regular bank transfers from abroad from family members – in this latter case family relationship may also need to be verified). Appropriate all-around health insurance coverage is also essential to your application. Finally, proper accommodation at a Hungarian residential address (rental agreement, statement from owner entitling to stay free of charge, proof the student himself/herself owns residential property in Hungary.

Documents Required

  • Valid passport
  • Certificate of admission from the relevant educational institution;
  •   Document to verify student status; or
  • Language certificate in proof of language proficiency examination,
  • Official diploma in proof of studies in a foreign language,
  • Certificate on the payment of scholarship grant;
  • Funds held on bank accounts;
  • if the third-country national’s residence in Hungary is financed by his/her family member, family relationship is to be verified, together with documentary evidence in proof of such family member’s ability to provide support.
  • Health insurance
  • Residential lease contract in proof of the rental of a residence;
  •  Document on accommodation by courtesy;
  • a document in proof of ownership of the residential property, in the form of abstract of title issued within 30 days to date;
  •  Valid letter of invitation with an official certificate affixed;
  • Documentary evidence to verify the reservation of accommodation and payment;
  • Notarised statement made by a family member with the right of residence in Hungary as holding a long-term visa or residence permit, with immigrant or permanent resident status, holding a residence card or a permanent residence card in accordance with specific other legislation, or with refugee status, promising a place of abode to the applicant; or
  • Real estate sales contract and a copy of the decision of the competent Budapest or county government agency granting permission for the acquisition of a real estate property;
  • Valid ticket for departure, or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket, or a means of transport lawfully used by the third-country national.
  • Other supporting documents.

During the process, third-country national is required to provide a statement undertaking the commitment of voluntary departure from the territory of the Member States of the European Union if the application is refused.

All Third-country nationals are required to promptly report to the immigration authority (the regional directorate of the Immigration and Asylum Office, any police station, or the competent Hungarian diplomatic or consular mission when staying abroad) if their travel document or residence permit is lost, stolen or destroyed.

What can you do with this permit?

You may work part time while studying (no separate work permit needed as long as the study relationship exists). Part time = as a main rule, up to 24 hours per week during the academic year, in school breaks it may be longer hours

Validity of the permit:

  • If studies/course is shorter than 2 years, the duration of the studies.
  • If the studies/course is longer than 2 years, the permit is valid for a period between 1 and 2 years and then can be extended.

When the validity of the residence permit is determined, the validity of the passport is taken into account as well. The period of stay specified in the residence permit is determined in such a way that the travel document has to be valid for a minimum of 3 months after the residence permit has expired.
